GTOP S5W2: Gameday #7

A Whitey Ford shutout gave the 1961 New York Yankees sole possession of first place once again. The 1969 Minnesota Twins finally had their offense held down in a loss to the 1961 Detroit Tigers, putting them a game back in the standings. The 1967 St. Louis Cardinals got a strong outing from Steve Carlton for a victory, and the 1969 New York Mets won their first game of the season after an extra-innings walk-off home run by Donn Clendenon.

St. Louis 3, San Francisco 1

Steve Carlton was excellent as the Cardinals won for the second time in the series. He gave up four hits in eight innings and only surrendered a solo homer to Willie Mays in the fourth inning. St. Louis (3-4) was already up 2-0 at that point due to Tim McCarver’s two-run double in the first inning. The Cardinals added an insurance run in the fifth on Roger Maris’ RBI triple. The Giants (3-4) put two runners on base with no one out in the bottom of the ninth but couldn’t score.

New York Mets 4, Boston 3 (10 inn.)

The Mets (1-6) had to rally twice for their first win of the season. Boston went up 2-0 after Rico Petrocelli and Carl Yastrzemski had RBI singles in the second and third innings, respectively. The Mets tied it in the fourth on Ed Kranepool’s two-run homer. It stayed 2-2 until the 10th inning. Boston (4-3) went up 3-2 on George Scott’s solo homer in the top of the 10th. But in the bottom of the 10th, Jerry Grote led off with a single. After the first out, pinch-hitter Donn Clendenon hit a walk-off home run.

New York Yankees 7, Los Angeles 0

Whitey Ford tossed a four-hit shutout as the Yankees (6-1) got back on track after losing the previous game. The Dodgers (4-3) put runners into scoring position in five innings, but only once got a runner to third base. The Yankees scored first thanks to an error and three consecutive walks, the last one to Yogi Berra that made it 1-0 in the first inning. In the second, Tony Kubek had an RBI single, followed by a three-run homer by Roger Maris. Yogi Berra hit his fifth home run of the season, a two-run shot, in the eighth inning.

Detroit 4, Minnesota 1 (10 inn.)

Detroit’s Don Mossi and Minnesota’s Jim Perry both pitched exceptionally, but neither would be involved in the decision as it went to extra innings. Minnesota (5-2) scored first in the fourth inning as Rod Carew led off with a double, and then scored on Rich Reese’s two-out double. In the top of the fifth, the Tigers scored without a hit thanks to two walks and an error. In the top of the 10th, Al Kaline hit a two-run homer, and the Tigers (2-5) got one more on an RBI single by Dick Brown to get the victory.
