GTOP S5W2: Gameday #8

As the season reaches the one-quarter mark, the 1962 Los Angeles Dodgers evened up the series with the 1961 New York Yankees thanks to Don Drysdale’s pitching effort, while the 1969 Minnesota Twins bested the 1961 Detroit Tigers to win their series. That puts the Yankees and Twins in a tie for first place with 6-2 records, and the Dodgers one game back.

New York Mets 8, Boston 5

The Mets (2-6) jumped out to an 8-0 lead, then held on for their second straight win. Bud Harrelson had an RBI triple and scored on a wild pitch in the fourth inning. Cleon Jones (who went 5-for-5) had an RBI double and Art Shamsky hit a two-run homer in the fifth. Ken Boswell had a two-run triple and Jones had his second RBI double in the sixth. The Red Sox (4-4) finally got on the board in the seventh when Tony Conigliaro tripled and scored on Mike Ryan’s sacrifice fly. They got four more in the eighth, including a two-run homer from Joe Foy and Conigliaro’s second triple in two innings, which drove in a run. But the Mets would finally put them away.

Los Angeles 2, New York Yankees 1

The Dodgers (5-3) evened up the series thanks to a great pitching performance from Don Drysdale, as he outdueled Ralph Terry of the Yankees. Both pitchers threw complete games and only allowed four hits. The Dodgers scored first in the third inning when Maury Wills tripled and scored on Willie Davis’ sacrifice fly. The Yankees evened it up in the fifth when Yogi Berra and Bill Skowron had back-to-back doubles. But the Yankees (6-2) would only get one more baserunner the rest of the way. With two outs in the bottom of the eighth, Jim Gilliam provided a go-ahead RBI single. Drysdale pitched a 1-2-3 ninth to finish off the win.

The Twins (6-2) won the series against the Tigers (2-6) with the help of a three-run third inning. Rod Carew had an RBI single and Tony Oliva followed with a two-run single. It stayed 3-0 until the top of the seventh, when Dick Brown hit a two-run homer, his fourth of the season. Minnesota got an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth with a solo shot by Harmon Killebrew, his fourth homer of the season. Ron Perranoski pitched two perfect innings to save Tom Hall’s victory.

St. Louis 4, San Francisco 3

The Giants broke out to a 2-0 lead on Orlando Cepeda’s two-run homer in the bottom of the first. But Bob Gibson settled down and retired the next 17 Giant hitters. In the meantime, the Cardinals tied the game in the third inning as Curt Flood had an RBI single and Roger Maris had an RBI triple. The Cardinals (4-4) took the lead in the top of the seventh on RBI singles by Orlando Cepeda and Mike Shannon. The Giants (3-5) had their chances late. They loaded the bases with no one out in the eighth, but couldn’t score. They scored once in the ninth on Tom Haller’s one-out RBI single, and had runners on first and third, but hit into a game-ending double play.
