Tom Seaver and Bob Gibson both took no-hitters into the seventh inning of their Gameday #10 contests, and while both would end up losing the no-hitter (and eventually their shutouts), both came out victorious.
Seaver’s win for the 1969 New York Mets came over the 1961 New York Yankees, which dropped them back into a first-place tie with the 1969 Minnesota Twins after the Twins won a high-scoring contest over the 1962 San Francisco Giants. Gibson’s victory over the 1962 Los Angeles Dodgers gave the 1967 St. Louis Cardinals sole possession of third place, one game back in the standings.
Minnesota 8, San Francisco 7
The Twins (7-3) jumped out to an early 4-0 lead, but it turned into a nailbiter. Leo Cardenas had an RBI double in the second inning, and Tony Oliva had a two-run single and Rich Reese had an RBI single in the third inning to make it 4-0. The Giants cut the deficit in half on Felipe Alou’s two-RBI double in the fourth. Minnesota went up 5-2 in the fifth when Rod Carew doubled and scored on an Oliva single. The Giants closed the gap again in the seventh on Tom Haller’s two-run homer, making it 5-4. The Twins looked like they had put the game away on Harmon Killebrew’s three-run homer in the top of the ninth, his fifth of the season, increasing the lead to 8-4. But in the bottom of the ninth, the Giants got a solo homer from pinch-hitter Ed Bailey, then a two-out, two-run homer from Willie Mays (his fourth of the season) to make it 8-7. The (4-6) Giants put the tying run on base but the Twins finally got the last out.

Boston 5, Detroit 4
The Red Sox (5-5) went up 3-0 in the second on Mike Andrews’ RBI double and Joe Foy’s two-run homer. The Tigers tied it in the fourth as Rocky Colavito hit a solo homer (his fifth of the season), and Chico Fernandez had an RBI single that scored an additional run via error, making it 3-3. Boston scored twice in the sixth to take back the lead on Foy’s RBI double and an RBI single by George Scott. Detroit’s Dick Brown led off the top of the ninth with a solo homer (his fifth of the season). The Tigers (3-7) then got the tying run to second base before the final out was made.

New York Mets 4, New York Yankees 3
Tom Seaver retired the first 18 Yankee hitters before a leadoff walk in the seventh inning. The Yankees also got their first hit in the seventh, but Seaver pitched out of the jam. The Mets (3-7) led 4-0 at that point. Art Shamsky hit a solo homer and Bud Harrelson had an RBI double in the fourth. Jerry Grote hit a two-run homer in the sixth. The Yankees (7-3) finally got on the board in the eighth on Bill Skowron’s two-run homer, and Roger Maris hit a solo homer to lead off the ninth to pull the Yankees within one run. But Seaver got the final three outs for the victory.

Bob Gibson outdueled Don Drysdale in a great pitching matchup. Gibson didn’t give up a hit until there were two outs in the seventh inning. The Cardinals went ahead 1-0 in the third as Lou Brock doubled, went to third, then scored on Roger Maris’ sacrifice fly. The Cardinals (6-4) made it 3-0 in the top of the eighth on Mike Shannon’s two-out, two-run double. Daryl Spencer led off the bottom of the eighth with a solo homer for the Dodgers (5-5), breaking up the shutout. In the bottom of the ninth, the Dodgers got runners to second and third with one out but the Cardinals were able to finish them off.
