The Tigers (4-7) had a couple of solo homers at that point, Norm Cash in the second and Bill Bruton in the fourth. Detroit pulled ahead in the bottom of the eighth. New York Yankees 5, New York Mets 3
The Mets built a 3-0 lead before the fans were even settled into their seats, as the first four batters of the game included Cleon Jones’ RBI single and Donn Clendenon’s two-run homer. A second straight win over the Yankees (8-3) wasn’t in the cards, however, as the Mets (3-8) wouldn’t score again. The Yankees’ first hit of the game was a solo homer by Bill Skowron in the fifth inning. Roger Maris hit a game-tying two-run homer in the sixth inning, and a go-ahead two-run homer in the eighth inning, his fifth and sixth of the season. Whitey Ford improved to 3-0 thanks to the comeback.

The Cardinals (7-4) took a 2-0 lead in the third inning as Curt Flood and Roger Maris had back-to-back RBI singles. The Dodgers (5-6) finally broke through in the top of the eighth on Willie Davis’ two-run single to tie the game. In the bottom of the ninth, Tim McCarver led off with a single and went to second on an outfield error. He was sacrificed to third base. With the infield in, Julian Javier hit a ground ball that was misplayed for a game-ending error and a walk-off for the Cardinals.
