For the first time since Gameday #18 of season 4, a New York Yankees team is not in first place. The red-hot 1967 St. Louis Cardinals won their seventh straight game and beat the 1961 Yankees in the opener of their four-game series. That puts the Cardinals in first place at 9-4, a game ahead of the Yankees and the 1969 Minnesota Twins, who also lost. The Cardinals’ Dick Hughes and the 1962 San Francisco Giants’ Juan Marichal pitched shutouts, and Jim Bunning of the 1961 Detroit Tigers almost joined them.

The Dodgers (6-7) built a 5-1 lead after three innings, which included a two-run single by Maury Wills in the second and an RBI double by Ron Fairly in the third. The Twins (8-5) got back into it with a four-run sixth inning, which featured RBI singles by Cesar Tovar and Johnny Roseboro, and a two-run double by pinch-hitter Charlie Manuel, making it 6-5. But the Dodgers put it away late, as Willie Davis had a two-out RBI single in the eighth inning, and Frank Howard had an RBI triple and scored on Daryl Spencer’s sacrifice fly to extend the lead to 9-5.

Dick Hughes scattered seven hits and shut down the Yankees (8-5). He ran into trouble just twice, as the Yankees loaded the bases with two outs in fifth, and had runners on the corners with one out in the sixth, but pitched out of it both times. The Cardinals (9-4) took the lead in the fourth on Tim McCarver’s two-run double and Mike Shannon’s solo home run. Orlando Cepeda hit a solo homer in the sixth. An error plated another run in the seventh. Julian Javier finished off the scoring with a two-run-double in the eighth. Whitey Ford took his first loss and missed out on becoming the first pitcher to start 4-0.

Juan Marichal was terrific, pitching a two-hit shutout with no walks. The Red Sox (6-7) only had two baserunners via singles in the third and eighth innings. Reggie Smith made it to third base with two outs in the eighth, but was stranded there. The Giants (6-7) took the lead immediately, as Harvey Kuenn led off the bottom of the first with a solo homer. It stayed 1-0 until the seventh, when Jose Pagan provided an RBI single. In a four-run eighth inning, Willie Mays and Orlando Cepeda hit back-to-back homers (the fifth of the season for both) and Pagan added an RBI double.

Jim Bunning almost made it three straight shutouts on the day. He took one into the eighth, but the Mets finally got on the board on Ed Kranepool’s sacrifice fly. The Tigers (5-8) had already built a 3-0 lead at that point. Al Kaline led off the fourth with a walk and eventually scored on a Dick Brown sacrifice fly, and then Kaline hit a two-run homer in the fifth inning. The Mets (4-9) threatened in the top of the ninth, putting runners on first and third with one out, but Bunning struck out the final two hitters.
