Once again, three teams are tied atop the standings. The 1961 New York Yankees avenged a series-opening 7-0 loss to the 1967 St. Louis Cardinals with a 7-0 victory of their own, courtesy of a Bill Stafford shutout. And the 1969 Minnesota Twins joined them atop the standings, all with 9-5 records, thanks to Jim Kaat, who took a perfect game into the eighth inning, finished with a shutout and became the league’s first four-game winner.
The 1962 San Francisco Giants are the only team to start this week with two victories in two games.

The Cardinals (9-5) won game 1 by the score of 7-0, so the Yankees (9-5) returned the favor in game 2. Bill Stafford tossed a six-hit shutout. He faced a no-out, bases-loaded situation in the second inning, and put runners on second and third with one out in the ninth, but got out of both jams. Bobby Richardson and Mickey Mantle both hit two-run homers in the third inning. Elston Howard had an RBI single in the sixth and a two-run homer in the eighth.

The Giants built a 6-0 lead before the Red Sox got on the board in the seventh inning. Jose Pagan and Harvey Kuenn had RBI singles in the fourth inning, Tom Haller hit a two-run homer in the fifth (his seventh) and Willie Mays added a solo blast in the sixth (his sixth). The Red Sox (6-8) closed the gap a bit with pinch-hitter Ken Harrelson’s RBI single in the seventh and Tony Conigliaro’s three-run homer in the eighth, but not enough as the Giants (7-7) kept scoring as well.

Two-run homers by Donn Clendenon and Cleon Jones in the first and third innings, respectively, helped the Mets to a 4-1 lead. The Tigers (5-9) made it 4-2 in the seventh with an unearned run on Jake Wood’s RBI single. The Mets (5-9) responded with a sacrifice fly by Jerry Grote in the eighth and a two-run double by Cleon Jones in the ninth to put the game out of reach.
