And just like that, the 1961 New York Yankees are back in first place, all by themselves. Two games ago, they were in second place for the first time all season. But after beating the 1967 St. Louis Cardinals for the second straight day, and seeing the 1969 Minnesota Twins lose again to the 1962 Los Angeles Dodgers, the Yankees are on top, all alone with a 10-5 record.
Los Angeles 6, Minnesota 4
The Dodgers (7-8) built a 6-0 lead, then held on. Tommy Davis had a two-run homer in the first inning, an RBI single in the fifth and an RBI triple in the sixth. Jim Gilliam scored three runs and drove in one. The Twins (9-6) cut the deficit in half in the seventh inning, scoring three times on an RBI single by Cesar Tovar and a two-run single by Rod Carew. In the top of the ninth, they put two runners on with no one out, but could only bring one of them home.

New York Yankees 3, St. Louis 1
Mickey Mantle got the Yankees (10-5) the lead in the first inning with a two-run homer (his fifth of the season), and it stayed 2-0 for a while. New York tacked on an extra run in the seventh inning when Tony Kubek led off with a triple, then scored on a Roger Maris single. The Cardinals (9-6) broke up the shutout bid in the eighth inning on Julian Javier’s solo homer, one of just four hits off Yankee starter Ralph Terry in eight innings.

Boston 6, San Francisco 5
The Red Sox (7-8) built a 6-1 lead after three innings, though San Francisco miscues led to four of the runs being unearned. The big hits were Mike Ryan’s RBI triple in the second, Carl Yastrzemski’s solo homer in the third and Rico Petrocelli’s two-run double in the third. The Giants (7-8) made it a game late, however. In the eighth inning, Orlando Cepeda hit a two-run homer (his sixth of the season), which was immediately followed by a solo shot by Felipe Alou, making it 6-4. In the top of the ninth, Chuck Hiller doubled and scored on Cepeda’s two-out single to make it a one-run game, but the Red Sox got the final out to end it.

Detroit 5, New York Mets 4 (13 inn.)
Both bullpens faltered in this one. The Tigers took a 3-0 lead in the second inning on Dick Brown’s three-run homer, his seventh of the season. Detroit had a defensive highlight in the third inning when the Mets’ Ed Kranepool hit into a triple play. But, New York made it 3-2 in the fourth on back-to-back RBI singles by Don Cardwell and Tommie Agee. Detroit reliever Gerry Staley was greeted in the top of the seventh by an Agee solo homer, and later in the inning, Art Shamsky put the Mets (5-10) ahead 4-3 with an RBI single. Down to their last out, the Tigers (6-9) tied the game. They had a runner on second with two outs in the top of the ninth, and Chico Fernandez came through with a game-tying RBI single. Neither team had much in the way of scoring chances in extra innings until the top of the 13th. With two outs and a runner on second, Norm Cash put the Tigers ahead with a run-scoring single that turned out to be the game-winner.
