GTOP S5W4: Gameday #16

The 1967 St. Louis Cardinals defeated the 1961 New York Yankees to split their four-game series, so at the season’s midway point, the two teams are tied atop the league with 10-6 records. The 1969 Minnesota Twins could have joined them, but the 1962 Los Angeles Dodgers beat them for the third time.

Elsewhere, Gary Bell became the league’s second 4-0 starter, helping the 1967 Boston Red Sox to a series split with the 1962 San Francisco Giants. And, the Detroit Tigers won their series against the 1969 New York Mets.

Los Angeles 6, Minnesota 5

The Twins’ 1-0 lead after the top of the first didn’t last long, as the Dodgers put up three in the second inning on a Johnny Roseboro two-run triple and a Daryl Spencer sacrifice fly. It became 4-1 after Jim Gilliam’s RBI double in the third. The Twins cut the deficit to 4-3 in the fifth after RBI singles by Tony Oliva and Rich Reese. The Dodgers (8-8) then got RBI singles from Ron Fairly in both the sixth and eighth innings, pushing the lead up to 6-3. Bob Allison hit a pinch-hit two-run homer in the top of the ninth for Minnesota (9-7), and Rod Carew’s double put the tying run on second with one out, but Dodger reliever Ed Roebuck came in to nail down the final two outs.
