GTOP S5W5: Gameday #17

As the second half of the season got underway, Whitey Ford of the 1961 New York Yankees and Don Cardwell of the 1969 New York Mets pitched shutouts in games that had major implications for the top of the standings

Ford’s victory kept the Yankees in first place with an 11-6 record and dropped the 1969 Minnesota Twins to two games back in the standings. Cardwell’s win meant that the last-place team knocked the 1967 St. Louis Cardinals out of first place.

Dick Brown of the 1961 Detroit Tigers hit his league-leading eighth home run in a victory.

New York Mets 3, St. Louis 0

The Mets’ Don Cardwell scattered six hits and pitched a shutout to knock the Cardinals (10-7) out of first place. St. Louis baserunners reached second base in four different innings, but no further. The Mets (6-11) got a solo home run from Cleon Jones in the first inning and a two-run triple by Jerry Grote in the eighth. Cardwell earned his first win in his fifth start.

The Tigers (8-9) outhomered the Giants (7-10) three to two. Harvey Kuenn led off the bottom of the first with one to put San Francisco ahead. Al Kaline hit one in the top of the third to give Detroit a 2-1 lead. Willie Mays hit a solo shot in the third inning (his seventh of the season), and Jim Davenport later added an RBI single to put the Giants up 3-2. In the fourth, Detroit tied it when Jake Wood tripled, then scored on a groundout. Rocky Colavito and Dick Brown hit solo homers in the fifth and seventh innings — their seventh and eighth of the season, respectively — to complete the scoring for Detroit.
