GTOP S5W5: Gameday #18

Gameday #18 had it all — two massive routs, a walk-off extra-inning victory, a triple play and a shutout. The standings tightened up again as one of the lopsided games saw the 1969 Minnesota Twins beat the 1961 New York Yankees 14-1. The 1967 St. Louis Cardinals couldn’t take advantage, as they were the extra-innings loser at the hands of the 1969 New York Mets. The 1967 Boston Red Sox put up 16 runs in their win, and Jack Sanford pitched a shutout for the 1962 San Francisco Giants.

Jim Kaat of the Twins and Gary Bell of the Red Sox both won, putting both pitchers at 5-0 after five starts.

The last-place Mets are the only team to be 2-0 after the first two games of this week’s series.

New York Mets 4, St. Louis 3 (12 inn.)

The Cardinals (10-8) scored three times in the top of the fourth to go up 3-0, but they wouldn’t score again. Orlando Cepeda had an RBI single and later scored on a wild pitch, and Mike Shannon drove in a run with a groundout. They threatened in the sixth, getting the first two batters on base, but New York turned a triple play. The Mets (7-11) got a solo homer from Tommie Agee in the fourth, an RBI double by Wayne Garrett in the fifth and a game-tying RBI single by Jerry Grote in the sixth. It stayed 3-3 until the bottom of the 12th. Agee led off with a single, went to second on a sacrifice bunt and scored on Cleon Jones’ walk-off single.

Boston 16, Los Angeles 3

The Red Sox (9-9) scored three or four runs in four different innings. George Scott had a monster game, going 5-for-6 with a home run and six RBI. He had a three-run homer in the second inning, as did Tony Conigliaro in the eighth, while Rico Petrocelli had a two-run shot in the first inning (his team-best sixth) and Mike Ryan had a solo blast in the fifth. Gary Bell didn’t have his best stuff against the Dodgers (9-9), but the run support was more than enough to see Bell improve to 5-0 after five starts.

Minnesota 14, New York Yankees 1

It was 1-1 after five innings, and then the Twins (10-8) put up six runs in the sixth inning and seven runs in the seventh inning. Jim Kaat pitched superbly to improve to 5-0 after five starts. Among the big hits were a two-run triple by Rich Reese and a two-run double by Cesar Tovar in the sixth, and a solo homer by Harmon Killebrew (tying the league high with eight) and two-run singles by Johnny Roseboro, Tovar and Tony Oliva in the seventh. The Yankees (11-7) only got a sacrifice fly by Roger Maris in the first inning as the Twins scored 14 unanswered.

San Francisco 4, Detroit 0

Jack Sanford tossed a shutout and Orlando Cepeda drove in all four Giant (8-10) runs. Sanford stranded three Tiger (8-10) baserunners on third base and retired the game’s final 12 hitters. Cepeda had a two-run homer in the first inning (his seventh of the season) and a two-run single in the fifth. Sanford hadn’t given up fewer than five runs in any of his previous four starts.
