GTOP S5W5: Gameday #19

Things have tightened up once again at the top of the standings. The 1969 Minnesota Twins beat the 1961 New York Yankees for the second straight day, and the 1967 St. Louis Cardinals finally pulled off a win against the 1969 New York Mets. So, the Twins, Yankees and Cardinals are all tied for first place with 11-8 records. And don’t forget about the 1967 Boston Red Sox, who have won four of their last five and are just one game back at 10-9.

St. Louis 2, New York Mets 1

Steve Carlton and Tom Seaver put on an impressive pitchers’ duel, and it was the Cardinals (11-8) that came out on top. Carlton only surrendered one run on back-to-back doubles by Donn Clendenon and Ron Swoboda in the second inning. St. Louis tied it in the third when Lou Brock doubled and scored on Curt Flood’s single. Orlando Cepeda hit a solo homer (his fifth of the season) off Tom Seaver in the sixth for what turned out to be the game-winning run. The Cardinals finally picked up a win after losing the first two to the Mets (7-12) and Carlton improved to 4-1 after five starts.

Boston 6, Los Angeles 5

After scoring 16 runs in the previous game, the Red Sox (10-9) kept things going in the first inning of this one. The first seven batters reached base safely, and Boston put up six first-inning runs off Sandy Koufax. Joe Foy had a two-run homer, Rico Petrocelli hit a two-run double and Reggie Smith had two doubles in the inning, the second one driving in two runs. Koufax and the Dodgers (9-10) wouldn’t give up another run, though. The Dodgers chipped away, including an RBI single by Maury Wills in the fourth and a two-run single by pinch-hitter Duke Snider in the sixth, making it 6-4. In the top of the ninth, Jim Gilliam hit a two-out homer. The next two batters singled, putting the tying run in scoring position. But the Red Sox got the final out to pick up their second win of the series.

Minnesota 3, New York Yankees 2

The Yankees (11-8) built a 2-0 lead on Mickey Mantle’s solo homer in the fourth inning (his sixth of the season) and a sacrifice fly by Tony Kubek in the fifth. Bill Stafford was rolling, giving up just one hit in the first six innings. But the Twins (11-8) started the bottom of the seventh with three straight singles to load the bases. Ted Uhlaender hit a sacrifice fly for the first run, and Johnny Roseboro tied it with an RBI single. Then, in the bottom of the ninth, the Twins put two runners on. Leo Cardenas almost had a walk-off single, but Harmon Killebrew was thrown out at the plate. It didn’t matter, as Uhlaender followed with an RBI single that ended it, giving the Twins their second straight victory.

Detroit 5, San Francisco 2

The Giants (8-11) scored a pair of first-inning runs on Jim Davenport’s two-out, two-run single. That would be it for San Francisco, however. The Tigers (9-10) got a solo homer from Norm Cash in the bottom of the first, then tied it in the second when Dick Brown doubled and later scored on Chico Fernandez’ sacrifice fly. In the bottom of the sixth, Brown hit a three-run homer, his league-best ninth of the season, to provide the winning margin.
