The 1961 New York Yankees are back on top by themselves at the end of week number five, as they evened up the series with the 1969 Minnesota Twins, dropping the Twins a game back. The 1967 St. Louis Cardinals lost again, keeping them out of first, while the 1967 Boston Red Sox won again to stay a game back. The 12-8 Yankees have a one-game lead with 12 to play.

New York Mets 9, St. Louis 2

The Mets erased a 1-0 deficit by scoring twice in the fifth inning and five more in the sixth, then added two more runs late. Ken Boswell had four hits, including an RBI single in the fifth, which was followed by an RBI double by Cleon Jones. In the sixth, Bud Harrelson had a two-run double and Tommie Agee smacked a three-run homer. Curt Flood drove in both of the runs for the Cardinals (11-9). The Mets (8-12) won a series for the first time this season. Jerry Koosman struck out 14 and improved to 3-1.

The Red Sox (11-9) built a 3-0 lead as George Scott had an RBI double in the first inning, and Tony Conigliaro hit a two-run homer in the fourth (his fifth of the season). The Dodgers (9-11) didn’t get a hit until the fifth inning, but the first one was a solo homer by Frank Howard. Howard also drove in a run with a triple in the seventh inning, cutting the deficit to 3-2. Boston tacked on an insurance run in the eighth on an RBI single by Scott. Jim Lonborg picked up his first win in five starts.

The Yankees (12-8) scored early and often and Roger Maris hit his seventh and eighth home runs of the season. Maris got the scoring started in the top of the first with a solo shot, and Yogi Berra added a three-run homer (his seventh). Minnesota (11-9) closed the gap to 5-3 after four innings, but the Yankees added one in the fifth on an error, and got an RBI double from Kubek and a two-run homer by Maris in the ninth. Ralph Terry improved to 3-2.
