GTOP S5W6: Gameday #21

The 1961 New York Yankees opened up their big series with the 1967 Boston Red Sox by posting a one-run victory to remain in first place. In a battle of second-place teams, the 1969 Minnesota Twins beat the reeling 1967 St. Louis Cardinals to keep within a game of the Yankees. Tom Seaver had the performance of the day, pitching a two-hit shutout for the 1969 New York Mets, while the Twins’ Jim Kaat became the league’s first six-game winner.

Detroit 10, Los Angeles 4

The Dodgers didn’t come to play, as the Tigers (10-11) scored six runs in the first three innings and LA committed a total of five errors. Rocky Colavito hit his eighth and ninth home runs of the season, while Dick Brown hit his league-high 10th. Both Tiger sluggers had three hits in the contest, while Jake Wood drove in three runs with a two-run double in the seventh and an RBI triple in the eighth. Frank Lary evened his record at 3-3. Tommy Davis homered for the Dodgers (9-12).

New York Yankees 4, Boston 3

The Red Sox scored three runs in the first two innings, but no more. George Scott had an RBI double in the first, and Mike Ryan had an RBI triple, then scored on a wild pitch in the second. For the Yankees (13-8), Yogi Berra hit his eighth home run of the season, a solo shot in the second. Berra also had an RBI single in the third and Elston Howard tied the game with an RBI single in the fifth. It stayed 3-3 until the ninth, as both teams had a runner thrown out at home trying to score in the middle innings. In the ninth, a Boston error put a Yankee runner on base with one out. A single and a walk loaded the bases, and Boston reliever John Wyatt walked home a run to break the tie. The Red Sox (11-10) put two runners on with one out in the bottom of the ninth but couldn’t even things up.

Minnesota 5, St. Louis 2

Jim Kaat had another strong outing, not giving up an earned run in eight innings, and improved to 6-0 after six starts. The Twins got things started quickly as Rich Reese hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the first. St. Louis (11-10) saw its first hit come in the fifth inning, and it contributed to a run on Dal Maxvill’s sacrifice fly, making it 3-1. Reese added an RBI single in the sixth and Cesar Tovar doubled home a run in the seventh to put Minnesota (12-9) up 5-1. Another St. Louis sacrifice fly, this one by Curt Flood, scored the Cardinals’ second and final run in the eighth inning.

New York Mets 1, San Francisco 0

Tom Seaver pitched a gem and outdueled San Francisco’s Jack Sanford. Seaver gave up two hits, both of which came in the first two innings. He then retired 23 consecutive Giant (9-12) hitters until a walk with two outs in the ninth. He got the last batter on a groundout to end it. The Mets (9-12) got their only run in the sixth. After the first two batters were retired, Ken Boswell walked, went to third on Cleon Jones’ single and scored on Ed Kranepool’s single. Seaver evened his season record at 3-3.
