GTOP S5W6: Gameday #23

The 1961 New York Yankees and the 1967 Boston Red Sox played their third consecutive one-run game. The Yankees won for the second time in the series, this time on a walk-off in the 12th inning. The 1969 Minnesota Twins also improved to 2-1 in their series against the 1967 St. Louis Cardinals. So heading into the final matchup of these series, the Yankees (14-9) now lead the Twins by one game and the Red Sox and Cardinals by two.

Los Angeles 5, Detroit 3

The Dodgers broke open a 1-1 tie with a four-run fourth inning, which featured a three-run homer by Frank Howard (his fifth) and an RBI single by Maury Wills. Jake Wood and Norm Cash hit solo homers (it was Cash’s sixth) for the Tigers (11-12). Don Drysdale pitched well enough to improve to 4-2, and give the Dodgers (10-13) their first win of the series while ending a five-game losing streak.

New York Yankees 3, Boston 2 (12 inn.)

The Red Sox scored twice early, then went quiet for nine innings. Carl Yastrzemski had an RBI single in the first inning and Joe Foy hit a solo homer in the third for a 2-0 Boston lead. But the Red Sox (12-11) would only get one runner to second base the rest of the contest. New York’s first hit of the game was a solo homer by Roger Maris in the bottom of the fourth, his league-high tying 10th. Maris doubled and Mickey Mantle singled him home to tie it 2-2 in the bottom of the sixth. It stayed that way until the bottom of the 12th. The Yankees (14-9) won the game when Clete Boyer led off with a triple and pinch-hitter Bob Cerv hit a fly ball deep enough to score Boyer on a sacrifice fly.

All five Twins runs came via three home runs. Tony Oliva hit two of them, a three-shot in the third inning and a solo blast in the sixth. Rod Carew added a solo home run in the eighth that made it 5-0. The Cardinals (12-11) broke up Jim Perry’s shutout bid in the bottom of the eighth when Roger Maris doubled home two runs with two out. Ron Perranoski went the final 1 1/3 and pitched out of two jams to get his fifth save for Minnesota (13-10).
