GTOP S5W6: Gameday #24

The 1961 New York Yankees took a huge step toward a third straight title, rallying to beat the 1967 Boston Red Sox in extra innings for the second straight day to win the series 3-1. Either the 1967 Minnesota Twins or the 1969 St. Louis Cardinals needed to win their series to stay close, but they couldn’t do that as the Cardinals captured the finale to split the series. So with eight games left to play, the Yankees (15-9) have a two-game lead over both the Twins and Cardinals.

New York Yankees 3, Boston 2 (11 inn.)

Carl Yastrzemski of the Red Sox and Roger Maris of the Yankees both hit a pair of home runs, accounting for all the runs scored in this one. Yastrzemski hit solo shots in the fourth and eighth innings to give the Red Sox a 2-0 lead. In the bottom of the ninth, Tony Kubek led off with a single, and Maris followed with a two-run blast to tie the game and send it to extra innings. In the bottom of the 11th with one out, Maris hit another one over the wall for the walk-off victory. Maris hit his 11th and 12th home runs, which leads the league. The Yankees (15-9) won four of the five meetings this season against the Red Sox (12-12), with all five being decided by one run.

St. Louis 3, Minnesota 1

The Cardinals (13-11) evened the series behind a strong pitching performance by Steve Carlton. St. Louis opened the scoring in the second inning on a Dal Maxvill sacrifice fly, then made it 3-0 in the seventh on an RBI single by Maxville and an error that scored the final run. Minnesota (13-11) broke up the shutout on a solo homer by Tony Oliva in the top of the eighth, his fifth of the season. Carlton pitched eight good innings to improve to 5-1 and Joe Hoerner pitched a 1-2-3 ninth for his sixth save.

New York Mets 5, San Francisco 4 (11 inn.)

The Giants (11-13) appeared to take control of the game in the sixth inning, when Harvey Kuenn led off with a solo homer and Felipe Alou had a three-run blast to make it 4-1. It stayed that way until late. The Mets (10-14) closed the gap to 4-3 in the eighth on RBI singles by Bud Harrelson and Wayne Garrett. In the top of the ninth, they tied it on Jerry Grote’s two-out single. In the top of the 11th, Cleon Jones led off with a double, was sacrificed to third and scored the winning run on a passed ball. The Giants put runners on first and second with one out in the bottom of the 11th but hit into a game-ending double play. The Mets earned a series split with the victory.
