GTOP S5W7: Gameday #25

Roger Maris is going to slug the 1961 New York Yankees to another championship, it seems. He had his second consecutive multi-homer game, his GTOP-record 13 and 14th of the season, to rally the Yankees to a series-opening comeback win over the 1962 San Francisco Giants. The Yanks’ closest competitors all lost, giving New York (16-9) a three-game lead with seven to play. Four teams are tied for second at 13-12.

Boston 2, Minnesota 0

Jim Lonborg scattered five hits and pitched out of three tricky situations en route to the shutout win. The Twins (13-12) got a runner to third base in the first and fifth innings with two outs, but Lonborg got the third out. In the top of the ninth, Minnesota put runners on first and third with one out, but Lonborg induced a game-ending double play. The Red Sox (13-12) managed only three hits, but two of them came in the fourth inning, one an RBI triple by Rico Petrocelli and the other an RBI single by Mike Ryan.

New York Mets 4, Los Angeles 2

Jerry Koosman struck out 11 in a complete-game win to improve to 4-2 and get the Mets out of last place. The Dodgers (10-15) actually led 2-0 after Tommy Davis homered in the second inning and Jim Gilliam plated a run with a single in the third. Down 2-1 in the sixth, Cleon Jones smacked a two-run homer to give the Mets (11-14) the lead. They added another run in the eighth when Ken Boswell tripled and scored on Ed Kranepool’s sacrifice fly.

Detroit 7, St. Louis 1

The Tigers (13-12) opened up a 4-0 lead in the third inning behind RBI singles by Steve Boros, Al Kaline and Rocky Colavito. Colavito hit his 11th home run of the season, a two-run shot, in the fifth inning to make it 6-1. Jake Wood added an RBI single in the fifth for the final run. St. Louis (13-12) could only muster one run on back-to-back doubles by Tim McCarver and Mike Shannon in the fifth. Frank Lary improved to 4-3 for the Tigers.

New York Yankees 8, San Francisco 4

The Giants (11-14) built a 3-0 lead as Felipe Alou had a solo homer in the second inning and a sacrifice fly in the third. It didn’t last, thanks to Roger Maris. He hit a pair of two-run homers, one in the fourth inning and again in the sixth inning, to give the Yankees (16-9) a 4-3 lead. They blew it open in the ninth when Yogi Berra provided a two-run single and Bill Skowron followed with a two-run homer, his sixth.
