Juan Marichal and the 1962 San Francisco Giants did the rest of the league a favor by knocking off the 1961 New York Yankees in the second game of their series. The 1969 Minnesota Twins and the 1967 St. Louis Cardinals took advantage, as their victories moved them to within two games of the Yankees with six to play.
Minnesota 2, Boston 1
Boston’s Gary Bell suffered his first loss, falling to 5-1, despite giving up only two hits in seven innings. One of those hits, however, was a two-run homer by Tony Oliva in the fourth inning, his sixth of the season. Twins starter Tom Hall was just a bit better, giving up one run on five hits in seven innings. Boston’s only run came in the sixth when Joe Foy doubled and scored on Carl Yastrzemski’s single. The Twins (14-12) evened the series with the Red Sox (13-13).
