GTOP S5W7: Gameday #27

The 1962 San Francisco Giants took care of the first-place 1961 New York Yankees for the second straight day, giving their closest competitors hope. But, other results went their way. New York began the day with a two-game lead, and they ended it with a two-game lead with five to play. It’s a logjam for second place, as the 1961 Detroit Tigers, 1967 Boston Red Sox, 1967 St. Louis Cardinals and 1969 Minnesota Twins are all 14-13, two games back of the Yankees.

Boston 13, Minnesota 8

The Red Sox won a slugfest thanks to a six-homer outburst, two of them by Tony Conigliaro. The first three were hit off Minnesota starter Jim Kaat, who came in as the league’s most successful pitcher but suffered his first loss to fall to 6-1. Conigliaro had a three-run blast in the first inning and a two-run homer in the eighth. Rico Petrocelli (2-run HR in the 3rd), Carl Yastrzemski (3-run HR in the 4th), Mike Andrews (solo in the 7th) and Joe Foy (solo in the 8th) had the other four. Tony Oliva hit the only one for the Twins (14-13), his seventh of the season. Conigliaro and Petrocelli are now tied for the team lead with seven homers apiece. Boston (14-13) improved to 2-1 in the series and kept the Twins from being just one game back.
