The rest of the league was on pins and needles watching the series finale between the 1961 New York Yankees and the 1962 San Francisco Giants. And while the Giants made a nice comeback that got the game to extra innings, the Yankees pulled off another walk-off victory to give them a two-game lead in the standings with four to play.
The Giants and Yankees split their series. No one else could take advantage, as their closest competitors all went 2-2 this week too. The 1967 St. Louis Cardinals and 1969 Minnesota Twins will be two games back going into week 8. The only team to win a series in week 7 was the 1969 New York Mets, though they couldn’t pull off a sweep as the 1962 Los Angeles Dodgers won the finale.
Minnesota 7, Boston 6
The Twins (15-13) scored five times in the second inning to go up 5-0, but Boston eventually tied the game at six in the eighth inning. Leo Cardenas and Ted Uhlaender had solo homers for Minnesota, and Cesar Tovar had a two-run triple. The Red Sox (14-14) tied it on George Scott’s two-out RBI single in the top of the eighth. Minnesota went back in front in the bottom of the eighth. WIth two outs, Rich Reese doubled, and Cardenas singled him home. Ron Perranoski pitched a 1-2-3 ninth for his seventh save.

Los Angeles 5, New York Mets 4
Cleon Jones hit a two-run homer in the top of the first for the Mets, but Tommy Davis did the same for the Dodgers in the bottom of the first. LA then hit back-to-back homers in the fifth inning, with Ron Fairly’s scoring two runs, then Davis following with a solo shot for his second homer of the game. The Mets (13-15) made it 5-4 in the sixth when one run scored on a Jones RBI single, and the other came home via an error. But Sandy Koufax and Ron Perranoski then retired the final 10 Met batters of the game, and Los Angeles (11-17) avoided a series sweep.

New York Yankees 7, San Francisco 6 (10 inn.)
The Yankees led 3-0 after the first inning and 6-2 after four innings, but the Giants came back to send the game to extra innings. Elston Howard hit a solo homer in the third inning and Roger Maris hit his league-leading 15th home run, a two-run shot, in the fourth inning. The Giants scored three times in the sixth on a Tom Haller sacrifice fly, and back-to-back RBI doubles by Jack Sanford and Harvey Kuenn. Willie Mays tied it at six in the seventh inning with his eighth home run of the season. The Giants (13-15) put runners into scoring position with no one out in the eighth and ninth innings but couldn’t bring anyone home. In the bottom of the 10th, the Yankees (17-11) put two runners on with two out and then Bill Skowron ended it with a walk-off hit.
