GTOP S5W8: Gameday #29

As the final four-game series of the season got underway, things tightened up at the top of the standings. The two second-place teams, the 1967 St. Louis Cardinals and the 1969 Minnesota Twins, were both victorious. The 1961 Detroit Tigers did them a favor by knocking off the 1961 New York Yankees in extra innings. That cuts the Yankees’ lead to just one game with three to play.

San Francisco 4, Los Angeles 2

The Giants (14-15) opened the scoring on Jim Davenport’s two-run single in the fourth inning. The Dodgers (11-18) broke up Juan Marichal’s shutout in the seventh inning as solo home runs by Ron Fairly and Willie Davis tied the contest at two. In the top of the ninth, Davenport and Chuck Hiller provided RBI doubles to put the Giants back on top. Marichal ran into trouble in the bottom of the ninth, as runners made it to second and third with one out, but he retired the final two hitters to get the win and improve to 6-2.

St. Louis 3, Boston 1

The Red Sox (14-15) scored first on George Scott’s solo homer in the fourth inning, but that would be it. The Cardinals (16-13) tied it in the fifth inning on Curt Flood’s RBI single. In the sixth, Julian Javier contributed a two-run double that put the Cardinals ahead to stay. Ray Washburn pitched seven solid innings for the win, putting him at 5-3.

Minnesota 11, New York Mets 4

The Mets (13-16) couldn’t keep pace after the first few innings with the Twins (16-13), who had five multi-run innings. The Mets’ Ed Kranepool had a two-run homer in the third inning and Tommie Agee tied it at four in the fourth inning with an RBI double. Minnesota then scored seven unanswered, with the big hits coming from Ted Uhlaender and Harmon Killebrew, who both had two-run doubles in the fifth and sixth innings, respectively. Dave Boswell didn’t pitch great, but it was enough to get the win.

Detroit 4, New York Yankees 1 (10 inn.)

The Tigers scored quickly in the top of the first thanks to Whitey Ford’s control issues. He gave up three walks in the frame, including one with the bases loaded to Dick Brown. Although Ford gave up six hits and seven walks, he didn’t allow another run in his nine innings of work. But the Yankees (17-12) couldn’t do much offensively against Frank Lary, as their only run came on Roger Maris’ 16th home run, a solo shot to lead off the bottom of the sixth that tied the game at one. Ford gave way to Jim Coates in the 10th inning, and the Tigers lit him up. The Tigers (15-14) put runners on second and third with one out, and Bill Bruton and Jake Wood both had RBI singles, and Chico Fernandez followed with an RBI triple. Hank Aguirre got the win in relief and Terry Fox earned his fifth save.
