GTOP S5W8: Gameday #30

All four teams that lost game one of their series bounced back to win game two. The result? The 1961 New York Yankees were victorious and they clinched at least a share of the championship, as they’re now two games up with two to play after the 1967 St. Louis Cardinals and 1969 Minnesota Twins both lost. Roger Maris homered for the third straight game to extend his GTOP record to 17 for the season.

Los Angeles 3, San Francisco 2

The Giants went up 2-0. Orlando Cepeda hit a solo homer in the fourth inning (his 10th of the season). Jose Pagan led off the sixth inning with a double and scored on a Cepeda groundout. But the Dodgers (12-18) tied it on Tommy Davis’ two-run homer in the sixth inning, his seventh of the season. In the seventh, Daryl Spencer singled, was sacrificed to second and scored on an error. The Giants (14-16) put runners on third base in the seventh and ninth innings but couldn’t bring a run home. Don Drysdale got the win to improve to 5-3.

The Cardinals got two runs back in the bottom of the third on a two-RBI double by Orlando Cepeda. Boston (15-15) went back up by five on a Rico Petrocelli two-run homer (his eighth) in the fifth inning to make it 7-2. New York Yankees 7, Detroit 3

The Tigers led 1-0 and 2-1 and were looking to play spoiler again. Norm Cash had a solo homer, his 10th of the season. But Roger Maris tied the game at two in the bottom of the fourth with his 17th home run of the season, and four batters later, Bill Skowron hit a two-run homer to make it 4-2. The Tigers (15-15) closed within a run on Al Kaline’s RBI single in the seventh inning. But New York (18-12) put the game away in the eighth when Elston Howard hit a two-run homer (his sixth), and Yogi Berra immediately followed with a solo shot (his ninth).
