The 1961 New York Yankees ended the season on a three-game winning streak, and their closest competitors lost on the final gameday, so the Yankees ended up winning the league by three games. Roger Maris hit his GTOP-record 18th home run in 32 games. Tom Seaver pitched a shutout for the 1969 New York Mets to close out their season.

The Dodgers (14-18) won their third straight against the Giants (14-18), allowing them to avoid sole possession of last place. The Dodgers went up 2-0 in the fifth thanks to RBI singles by Ron Fairly and Tommy Davis. They extended the lead to 4-0 in the top of the eighth on an RBI triple by Fairly and an RBI single by Willie Davis. The Giants finally got on the board in the bottom of the eighth. Felipe Alou led off with a home run, and a few batters later, Willie McCovey had a two-run shot, his second pinch-hit homer in two games, and his fourth of the season. That made it a one-run game, but Dodger closer Ron Perranoski pitched a 1-2-3 ninth for his eighth save.

Boston 4, St. Louis 3
The Red Sox (16-16) evened up the series with the Cardinals (17-15) with the one-run victory. Julian Javier had an RBI double for St. Louis in the top of the second, but Rico Petrocelli hit a two-run homer in the bottom half of the frame, his ninth, to give Boston a 2-1 lead. An RBI single by Carl Yastrzemski made it 3-1 in the sixth. The Cardinals tied it at three in the top of the seventh, as one run scored via a groundout and Roger Maris had an RBI single. Tony Conigliaro hit a home run to lead off the bottom of the seventh (his eighth) to put the Red Sox back in front, and that turned out to be the game-winning hit.

New York Mets 3, Minnesota 0
Tom Seaver tossed his second shutout of the season, improving to 5-3, and evening the series with Minnesota. It wasn’t easy, as he gave up five hits and five walks, but the Twins (17-15) stranded 10 baserunners, including runners in scoring position in four different innings. The Mets (15-17) got an RBI single from Cleon Jones in the first and an RBI double by Tommie Agee in the fifth. Jones led off the sixth with a triple and scored on Donn Clendenon’s double to complete the scoring.
