The Giants need to hit a lot better than they did in the season’s opening series, or it’s going to be a long year. San Francisco managed just five runs and 13 hits in a three-game series against the Cincinnati Reds. The Giants struck out 35 times! After losing the first two, they did salvage the finale. The pitching was good, as the Giant hurlers also gave up only 13 hits, and had 34 strikeouts.

March 27 (5-1 loss): Logan Webb and Hunter Greene were excellent through five innings as neither team scored. Webb hadn’t given up a hit, while Greene had only allowed one. The Giants finally broke through in the top of the sixth when they put together three hits. LaMonte Wade led off with a single and later scored on Matt Chapman’s single. In the bottom of the sixth, the Reds countered with five runs. An error put the first baserunner on with one out, and Webb then gave up his first two hits of the game, which tied the score. The Giants turned to the bullpen, but that didn’t work out. Erik Miller walked the first two batters he faced, the second one with the bases loaded. Jeimer Candelario then smacked a double that cleared the bases and made it 5-1. Four Cincinnati relievers retired all 11 batters that they faced.

March 30 (4-1 win): Tyler Fitzgerald had three doubles, Matt Chapman hit the Giants’ first home run of the season and Robbie Ray had an excellent start as San Francisco recorded its first victory. Fitzgerald’s first double came in the third inning and put runners on second and third with one out. LaMonte Wade came through with a two-run single to make it 2-0. The Reds got one back on Santiago Espinal’s RBI single in the bottom of the third. Cincinnati still had runners on the corners with one out, but Ray struck out the next two hitters. He would strike out 12 in six innings. It would stay 2-1 until the eighth, when Chapman launched a two-run homer. Camilo Doval struck out the side in the bottom of the ninth to close out the win.
