Scoring runs continued to be an issue in the second series of the season. After plating six runs in the second inning of the opener against the Houston Astros, the San Francisco Giants managed just two runs over the next 25 innings. The Giants won the opener, but the Astros won the next two.
After six games, the Giants are 2-4, three games behind their actual record. In their four losses, they’ve scored zero runs twice and one run twice. They’re batting .156 as a team so far.

March 31 (6-3 win): The Astros got an early run in the bottom of the first when Jose Altuve led off with a double and later scored on Yordan Alvarez’s sacrifice fly. But the Giants would get all the runs they would need in a six-run second inning. Mike Yastrzemski hit a three-run homer, Willy Adames belted a two-run homer and Heliot Ramos provided an RBI single. That would be more than enough for Jordan Hicks, who had a solid six innings on the mound. The Astros threatened in the ninth and brought the tying run to the plate but Tyler Rogers came in and got the final out for the save.

April 1 (5-0 loss): The Giants were shut out for the second time already this season as Hayden Wesneski struck out 10 and scattered five hits in seven innings of work. The Giants only put runners into scoring position once, when Patrick Bailey and Willy Adames both singled in the third inning, but Wesneski got the third out. Jeremy Pena had three doubles and Isaac Paredes had a two-RBI triple in the fourth inning for the Astros. Logan Webb didn’t pitch badly, but dropped to 0-2 after two starts.

April 2 (8-1 loss): The Giants scored first in the second inning on Matt Chapman’s second home run of the season. But they wouldn’t score again, and the Astros got three unearned runs off Landen Roupp in the bottom of the second, with Issac Paredes providing a two-run single. Reliever Hayden Birdsong got lit up in the sixth inning, as he surrendered five runs, including a two-run homer to Yainer Diaz and a solo shot to Zach Dezenzo.
