April 8 (6-0 loss): The Reds shut out the Giants for the second time this season with Nick Lodolo on the hill. After six more scoreless innings, he’s now gone 13 total without giving up a run. The Giants’ best chance came in the second inning when they loaded the bases with no one out, but Lodolo struck out the next two batters and got the final one to fly out. Jeimer Candelario and Jake Fraley both had two-run homers in the second and fifth innings, respectively.

April 9 (4-1 win): In real life, Justin Verlander didn’t get his first win until his 17th start on July 23. Here, he picked up his first victory in his third start after another good outing in which he gave up just one run in 5 2/3 innings. The Reds scored first on a Christian Encarnacion-Strand solo homer in the second inning. In the bottom of the third, with the bases loaded and two outs, Matt Chapman provided a go-ahead two-run single. It stayed 2-1 until the bottom of the seventh, when Tyler Fitzgerald hit a solo homer. In the eighth, the Giants got one more when Jung Hoo Lee walked and scored on Heliot Ramos’ double. Four San Francisco relievers gave up just one walk in 3 1/3 innings.
