4/11-13/2025: San Francisco at NY Yankees

A troublesome trend has arisen after the San Francisco Giants were swept in a three-game series at the New York Yankees. The Giants are now just 2-7 on the road this season (and this was the first of a 10-game road trip).

It was an entertaining series, at least for the first two games. The Giants put on a couple of remarkable late-inning comebacks to tie the games, only to have the Yankees score late for the win. Then the Giants were shut out for the fourth time this season in the finale.

Mike Yastrzemski and Sam Huff both had two homers in a game, though so did the Yankees’ Jasson Dominguez, and one was a walk-off.

April 11 (6-5 loss): The Yankees led 4-0 after four innings, with Ben Rice providing a bases-loaded, three-run double in the fourth. Three home runs got the Giants back into the game. Mike Yastrzemski hit a solo shot in the sixth to give San Francisco its first run. Wilmer Flores hit a two-run blast in the top of the seventh, and Yastrzemski later hit his second homer in two innings, a two-run shot, to tie the game at five. But the Yankees came right back and took the lead in the bottom of the seventh on Trent Grisham’s two-out RBI double, and that’s how it ended.

April 12 (8-7 loss): This Giant comeback was even more dramatic, but the defeat was even more crushing. New York led 6-0 after three innings and 7-0 after seven innings. Jasson Dominguez, Austin Wells and Paul Goldschmidt all homered to help give the Yankees the big lead. The Giants finally got things going in the top of the eighth when Sam Huff hit a two-run homer. In the top of the ninth, LaMonte Wade had a two-run double, followed by an RBI double by Wilmer Flores, followed by another two-run homer by Huff that tied the game at seven. But with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, Dominguez hit a walk-off home run, his second of the game.

April 13 (2-0 loss): The Giants were shut out for the fourth time this season. Logan Webb only had one bad pitch, but it was a two-run homer by Cody Bellinger in the sixth inning, and that dropped Webb to 1-3 after four starts. The Giants had runners on second and third with no one out in the second inning, and second and third with one out in the seventh inning, but couldn’t score either time. It wasted a good pitching performance by San Francisco, as the Yankees managed just four hits to the Giants’ six.
