2025 San Francisco Giants April Recap

The 2025 San Francisco Giants got off to a great start in real life. In this replay, much less so. The Giants were 19-12 at the end of April 2025, but here they are just 14-17. And that’s fine, because at the end of the day this was a .500 team, so hopefully they will get there eventually.

As with my previous APBA replays, the statistics have been tilted a little bit toward the pitchers. The Giants are hitting 20 points less than their season average and scoring almost a run less per game. The pitchers have an ERA a half-point better than real life.

Among the hitters, Jung Hoo Lee and Tyler Fitzgerald are overperforming, but most everyone else is underperforming. Logan Webb has been quite dominant and has a 1.99 ERA after seven starts, but he’s just 2-3 due to some poor run support. Robbie Ray is 3-1 but has been hit hard his last couple of starts.

It is jarring going to a league with so many strikeouts! Between the Giants and their opponents they are averaging more than 18 in each game.

I like to track the starting pitcher quality and how it affects results. I’m the using the master pitcher ratings in this project. With starting pitchers going fewer innings in 2025, this should have less effect than my earlier replays, but I still thought it might be interesting to see if there are any trends.

SF 5+ advantage: 3-3
SF 1-4 advantage: 2-1
Equal starters: 2-1
Opponent 1-4 advantage: 3-7
Opponent 5+ advantage: 4-5

So the Giants have only had a higher-rated starting pitcher in 9 of the first 31 games. Somehow they’ve managed to win more than their share of games when it’s a big difference.
