8/1-2/1984: Cleveland at Detroit

I picked up the final two games of a series between the Cleveland Indians and the Detroit Tigers, and the teams split these contests. The Tigers were the World Champions in 1984, but it’s not going well for them in the replay as they are in third place in the AL East and 10 games back.

August 1 – replay Tigers 5-3 – actual Indians 4-2
August 2 – replay Indians 3-2 (11) – actual Tigers 2-1

August 1 (Tigers 5-3): The Indians outhit the Tigers, 10-7, but Detroit came through with the big blows. Kirk Gibson had a two-out, two-run single in the bottom of the second to make it 3-1. Ruppert Jones provided a two-out, two-run triple in the bottom of the sixth to make it 5-2. The Indians’ Tony Bernazard cut it to 5-3 with an RBI single in the top of the seventh. But Cleveland wouldn’t get any closer, as Tigers winning pitcher Dan Petry pitched a 1-2-3 eighth, as did closer Willie Hernandez in the ninth for the save.

August 2 (Indians 3-2, 11 inn.): Chris Bando drove in all three Cleveland runs. His two-run double in the eighth inning broke up Jack Morris’ shutout bid and gave the Indians a 2-1 lead. Kirk Gibson evened it up with a solo homer for the Tigers in the bottom of the eighth, however. It went to extra innings and in the top of the 11th, George Vukovich doubled and went to third on a sacrifice bunt. With the infield in, Bando hit a grounder that found a hole and went through for the go-ahead RBI single. Indian pitchers retired the final nine Tiger batters.
