1/15/23: Sacramento 114, San Antonio 104

The Sacramento Kings began the second half of the season by pulling off a strong road victory at the San Antonio Spurs, 114-110.

The Kings won their sixth game in a row and improved to 10 games over .500 at 26-16.

De’Aaron Fox scored a game-high 30 points and both Domantas Sabonis (18 points, 16 rebounds) and Harrison Barnes (14 points, 12 rebounds) had double-doubles. Keldon Johnson led the Spurs with 25 points and Jakob Poeltl added 21 points and 12 rebounds.

The Kings won the game thanks to three-point shooting. The Kings shot better from beyond the arc (16-for-36, 44.4%) than they did from inside (finishing at 43.5% overall). They held the Spurs to 3-for-19 (15.8%) on three-pointers.

The Spurs’ only lead of the game came at 2-0. The Kings off to an excellent start, and quickly took a 15-4 lead just four minutes in. The Spurs then went on a 15-4 run, and it was tied at 19. Sacramento led 27-26 after the first quarter.

The Kings led the entire second quarter, but it was still a close contest. The Kings took an eight-point lead several times, last at 49-41, though San Antonio got back within a point at 50-49. It was 55-49 at halftime.

Sacramento got some breathing room in the third quarter, building a 16-point lead at 75-59. That would be the Kings’ largest of the game, and it would also occur at 77-61 and 86-70. The Spurs would cut it in half, however, to 86-78 at the end of the third quarter.

The Spurs would get as close as four points in the fourth quarter, but that came at 90-86 with under nine minutes to play. Fox would score the first five points in a 7-0 run to restore an 11-point lead, however. Sacramento’s biggest lead of the quarter was 12 at 107-95 with under four minutes to go. The Spurs made one more push to get the deficit down to five points before the Kings put the game away.
