8/9-12/1984: Oakland at California

The California Angels took three of four games at home against the Oakland Athletics in this series, reversing the real-life result.

Dick Schofield hit .467 (7-for-15) to lead California, which managed a .311 team batting average over the four games. Carney Lansford batted .412 (7-for-17) to pace the Athletics, who hit just .248 as a team.

The Angels opened the bottom of the eighth with singles by Brian Downing and Reggie Jackson. A double play got two outs, but moved to Downing to third base. Bob Boone came through with a double and Downing scored what turned out to be the game-winning run.

August 10 (Athletics 4-0): The Athletics’ Lary Sorensen gave up 11 hits and two walks, yet somehow pitched a complete-game shutout. Eleven Angels were stranded on base, including runners in scoring position in five different innings. California loaded the bases with no one out in the first inning but didn’t score, setting a tone for the remainder of the contest. The A’s opened the scoring in the fourth when Carney Lansford tripled and Dwayne Murphy hit a sacrifice fly. Lansford and Dave Kingman had RBI singles in the fifth inning. Jeff Burroughs hit a solo homer in the eighth.
