The 1901 Southern California Hornets opened the season with three losses to the Ocala Stallions. The Hornets showed some fight in rallying from deficits in each game, only to come up short.
Fred Tenney batted .364 (4-for-11) and Roger Bresnahan drove in five runs. Eddie Plank and Bill Reidy pitched reasonably well in losses.

Game #1 — Ocala 3, SoCal 2
It took until the fifth inning for the Hornets to get their first hit of the season, and it was looking like a shutout until late. Ocala got an RBI single from John Farrell in the second inning and Clarence Foster provided a two-run double in the eighth to make it 3-0. SoCal finally strung together a series of hits in the bottom of the eighth. Harry Steinfeldt led off with a triple. After Tommy Dowd walked, Herman Long and Eddie Plank had back-to-back RBI singles to make it 3-2. A sacrifice bunt put two runners into scoring position with one out, but the next two batters couldn’t make anything happen, and the Hornets went down 1-2-3 in the ninth.

The Stallions struck first on Clarence Foster’s two-run homer in the top of the first, but the Hornets came right back in the bottom of the first on an RBI double by Fred Clarke and an RBI triple by Roger Bresnahan. Ocala went up 3-2, but the Hornets tied it again in the fourth on a Tommy Dowd two-out RBI single. Ocala scored what turned out to be the game-winning run in the seventh when William Nance dropped a fly ball, one of four SoCal errors.

The Hornets took their first lead of the season in the bottom of the first on Roger Bresnahan’s sacrifice fly, and again at 2-1 on Fred Tenney’s RBI single in the second. But the Stallions crushed starter Harry Howell, scoring four times in both the third and fourth innings. It looked to be over at 9-2, but the Hornets came back with a five-run fourth inning. Algie McBride had a pinch-hit RBI single, Fred Clarke walked with the bases loaded and Bresnahan had a bases-loaded, three-run double. But, the Hornets wouldn’t score again.
