The 1901 Southern California Hornets began their second series by dropping an extra-innings heartbreaker to fall to 0-4, but routed the Summerville SIMS in the second contest of the two-game series to attain their first victory.
Fred Clarke batted 4-for-10 (.400), with all four hits coming the finale, while Harry Steinfeldt had three triples, giving him four on the season, plus a team-best four RBI. Eddie Plank picked up the first win in franchise history.

Game #4 — Summerville 4, SoCal 3 (11 inn.)
Bill Bernhard did all he could to keep up with Christy Mathewson. While Mathewson had seven 1-2-3 innings, Bernhard didn’t have a single one, but pitched out of trouble time and time again. The Hornets struck first in the second inning when Tommy Dowd provided a two-out RBI single. The SIMS tied it in the sixth and went ahead 3-1 in the seventh on Mike Heydon’s two-run double. As they did in the first series, the Hornets showed some fight to rally back. Harry Steinfeldt led off the bottom of the seventh with a triple and scored on Dowd’s sacrifice fly. Herman Long then singled, and scored on Bernhard’s second double of the game. That was it for the Hornets, however, as Mathewson retired the final 14 batters he faced. With one out in the top of the 11th, the Hornets committed their fourth error of the game. A few batters later, Kid Elberfeld provided a two-out RBI single that turned out to be the winning run.

The Hornets probably won’t face many D pitchers this season, so they made of the most of Bill Hart’s start. With the bases loaded and two outs in the first inning, Harry Steinfeldt provided a bases-clearing triple. In the third, Dick Padden had an RBI single. In the fourth, Fred Tenney had an RBI single, William Nance had an RBI double and Fred Clarke had an RBI single. Steinfeldt had his second triple of the game in the seventh inning, providing another RBI. Tommy Dowd had an RBI double in the ninth. Eddie Plank was excellent in the win, not allowing a hit until two outs in the sixth inning. The SIMS would score an unearned run after that hit, and get another one in the seventh on Erve Beck’s RBI double. Plank gave up five hits and no walks while striking out seven.
