The 1901 Southern California Hornets won their first series in franchise history and increased their winning streak to three games with a two-game sweep of the Bluffton Barnstormers.
After losing three one-run games in the first four contests of the season, the Hornets (3-4) finally won one after scoring twice in the top of the ninth inning of the opener to claim a 7-6 win. SoCal’s offense couldn’t be stopped in the finale, leading to a 16-7 victory.
Fred Clarke and Harry Steinfeldt both had six hits in nine at-bats (.667). Clarke drove in a team-best five runs over the two games.

Game #6 — SoCal 7, Bluffton 6
The Hornets needed two comebacks in this game, including one in the ninth inning. Bluffton led 3-0 after three innings, but SoCal tied it in the third as Harry Steinfeldt had an RBI single and Herman Long had a two-out, two-run double. The Hornets went up 5-3 in the fifth as Fred Clarke had a sacrifice fly and Steinfeldt had an RBI double. But, Bluffton scored once in the sixth and twice in the seventh to go back in front 6-5. In the top of the ninth, William Nance had a one-out single, and Clarke and Roger Bresnahan had back-to-back RBI doubles to give the Hornets at 7-6 lead. There was drama in the bottom of the ninth. Bluffton’s Dave Fultz led off with a triple. He tied to score on a fly ball to right field, but Tommy Dowd gunned him down at the plate for a game-saving double play. Harry Howell pitched two scoreless innings in relief for his first win.

Game #7 — SoCal 16, Bluffton 7
The Hornets feasted on a D-rated pitcher for the second time this season. All nine starters had at least one run scored, one hit and one RBI. It was 11-0 after four innings, including a nine-run third inning on nine hits. Fred Clarke and Harry Steinfeldt both had two hits in the inning, one being a two-RBI triple by Clarke. The 11-run lead didn’t last, however. Eddie Plank got chased from the game after giving up four in the fifth and three in the seventh, making it 11-7. Bill Bernhard restored order by pitching two scoreless innings, and the Hornets tacked on five more runs in their final two at-bats. Plank did get the win to improve to 2-1.
