The 1901 Southern California Hornets enjoyed several historic firsts against the Laveen Lollygaggers, including the franchise’s first-ever three-game sweep, which boosted SoCal’s winning streak to six games.
The Hornets (6-4) also got their first home run (Fred Clarke), first shutout (Bill Reidy) and first save (Eddie Plank). Clarke continued his hot start, going 6-for-12 (.500) with four extra-base hits, raising his season average to a team-best .419.

The Hornets jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the third inning with an RBI single by Fred Tenney and an RBI double by Fred Clarke. Herman Long had two-out RBI singles in both the fourth and sixth innings to account for the other two SoCal runs. Laveen managed just a two-run homer by Jimmy Barrett in the fifth inning. Although the Lollygaggers got a runner on base in every inning but one, there was only one other time that a runner made it to second base as Harry Howell outpitched Rube Waddell for his second win of the season.

Bill Reidy had an amazing performance with an eight-hit shutout. He pitched out of three dangerous situations. Laveen had runners at the corners with two outs in the fourth, runners on second and third with no one out in the sixth and runners on second and third with one out in the eighth. Fred Clarke hit the first home run of the season, a solo shot, in the first inning. William Nance had an RBI single in the fifth and Tommy Dowd had a two-run double in the sixth. Reidy earned his first win of the season.

The Hornets jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the top of the first as Harry Steinfeldt had a two-run double and Joe Sugden followed with an RBI single. Laveen would go in front 4-3 after four innings, however. SoCal caught a break in the fifth when Chick Fraser walked three straight batters, the last one with the bases loaded to Steinfeldt, to tie the score. In the sixth, Tommy Dowd led off with a single and Dick Padden doubled him home. Winning pitcher Bill Bernhard made it 6-4 with a sacrifice fly. Laveen got one back in the seventh, but Bernhard got out of a jam with runners on second and third with one out. Bernhard got his first win of the season and Eddie Plank pitched the ninth to earn the save.
