1901 HRBL: Hornets vs. Old Baymen

The 1901 Southern California Hornets saw their six-game winning streak come to an end with two competitive losses of two runs and one run to the Silver Spring Old Baymen. The Hornets are now 6-6 overall.

Fred Clarke had another good series, batting .500 (4-for-8) to raise his season average to .431.

Game #9 — Silver Spring 3, SoCal 1

Harry Howell pitched well, but the Hornets couldn’t muster much offense off A-rated pitcher Red Donahue. Bill Keister drove in all three Old Baymen runs with RBI singles in the first and third innings and an RBI triple in the fifth. Two of the four Hornet hits came in the fourth inning. William Nance led off with a single and he scored on Fred Clarke’s double for SoCal’s only run.

Game #10 — Silver Spring 8, SoCal 7

This game went back and forth. Silver Spring went up 2-0, but the Hornets led 5-2 after three, as Roger Bresnahan had an RBI single in the first and and a two-run double in the third. Harry Steinfeldt’s fifth triple of the season also scored a run in the first inning. Silver Spring bounced back with five runs in the top of the fourth, including a two-run double by Bill Keister, to go back in front 7-5. The Hornets tied the game quickly, as Fred Clarke had a two-out RBI single in the fourth and Dick Padden hit a sacrifice fly in the fifth. Bill Bernhard was exceptional in relief, throwing four scoreless innings. Unfortunately, he couldn’t make it five, as the Old Baymen’s Nap Lajoie hit a solo homer with one out in the top of the ninth. The Hornets couldn’t make another comeback in the bottom of the ninth and lost a one-run game for the fourth time this season.
