8/20-22/1984: Oakland at Detroit

The 1984 World Series champion Detroit Tigers continued to struggle in this replay, both on my tabletop and overall. They lost two of three at home here to the lowly Oakland Athletics.

In real life, the Tigers scored 37 runs in a three-game sweep, but in this replay they managed just six, five of them coming in their lone victory.

The Tigers are 72-56, in third place in the AL East, 11 games out of first place. The Athletics are 61-68 and in fifth place in the AL West.

August 20 — replay Athletics 1-0 — actual Tigers 14-1
August 21 — replay Tigers 5-4 — actual Tigers 12-6
August 22 — replay Athletics 3-1 — actual Tigers 11-4

August 20 (Athletics 1-0): Carney Lansford hit a solo homer in the top of the first, and Curt Young took care of the rest, pitching a three-hit shutout to lead the Athletics to the 1-0 victory. The Tigers put runners on first and second with two outs in the second inning, and got a runner to third base with two outs in the sixth, but couldn’t bring the tying run home. Jack Morris was the unlucky losing pitcher.

August 21 (Tigers 5-4): The Tigers built an early 4-0 lead with the help of a two-run homer by Ruppert Jones and an RBI triple by Dave Bergman. Solo homers by the A’s Dwayne Murphy and Mike Heath cut the lead in half to 4-2 in the top of the sixth. Detroit got what turned out to be a much-needed insurance run in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI single by Alan Trammell. Oakland recorded an RBI single from Dave Kingman in the eighth and a solo homer by Rickey Henderson in the ninth but fell a run short of a comeback.

August 22 (Athletics 3-1): Dave Kingman hit a two-run homer in the top of the first to get the A’s off to a good start. They made it 3-0 in the fifth when Donnie Hill had one of his three hits, an RBI double. Detroit didn’t get on the board until the seventh, when Doug Baker led off with a triple and scored on a groundout. The Tigers left runners in scoring position in four other innings thanks to strong pitching by Oakland starter Bill Krueger and two relievers.
