The Southern California Hornets earned another two-game split, this time against the Creole Heathens. But the Hornets were left ruing what could have been after battering the league’s top pitcher, Cy Young, and having chances to win the opener before falling in extra innings. Still, they bounced back to capture the finale and even the season record at 8-8.

Somehow, the Hornets took a 3-1 lead after two innings on Cy Young. William Nance led off the bottom of the first with a triple and scored on Tommy Dowd’s sacrifice fly. In the second, Dowd came through with a two-out, two-run single. The Hornets looked to be done when Creole took a 4-3 lead after six innings. But the Hornets scored twice more off Young in the seventh, as they loaded the bases with one out and Fred Clarke had a sacrifice fly, followed by an RBI single by Roger Bresnahan. But Creole went back in front 6-5 in the eighth inning on a two-run homer by Frank Shugart. The Hornets still battled back against Young in the bottom of the ninth. Pinch-hitter Algie McBride led off with a single. Pinch-runner Tommy Corcoran moved to second on a groundout, and Dowd came through with a single and his fourth RBI of the game, tying it at six and sending the contest to extra innings. Young was lifted for D-rated Archie Stimmel, but the Hornets couldn’t come through against him. SoCal loaded the bases with one out in the 10th but hit into an inning-ending double play. In the top of the 11th, an error put runners on second and third with one out and Hugh Duffy executed a squeeze play to put Creole back in front. SoCal got a baserunner aboard in the bottom of the 11th but hit into a game-ending double play.

Bill Reidy turned in a nice start to improve to 2-1 with a complete-game effort. Roger Bresnahan had a big day at the plate, going 3-for-4 with three RBI. It was 1-1 heading to the fifth, when William Nance had an RBI triple, and Bresnahan later had a two-run double to put SoCal up 4-1. Creole cut the deficit to 4-3 in the bottom half of the frame. In the seventh, the Hornets went back up by three after another RBI double by Bresnahan and an RBI single by Steinfeldt. Reidy kept the Heathens scoreless over the final four innings.
