1901 HRBL: Hornets vs. Maulers

For two games that saw CZ starters for both sides in both contests, the matchups between the Southern California Hornets and Monroeville Maulers couldn’t have been any different. The Maulers claimed a 3-1 win in a pitchers’ duel in the opener, while the Hornets (7-7) won a slugfest, 10-9, on a walk-off hit in the ninth inning.

Being demoted from first to sixth in the lineup did good things for Fred Tenney, as he batted .750 (6-for-8). Dick Padden had the walk-off single in the victory. The Hornets should have pitched around the Maulers’ Sam Crawford, who went 7-for-9 (.778) with six RBI.

Game #13 — Monroeville 3, SoCal 1

The Hornets’ Harry Howell and the Maulers’ Jack Cronin traded zeroes for five innings. In the bottom of the sixth, Sam Crawford broke up the shutout with a two-run double to put the Maulers ahead 2-0. SoCal came back with a run in the top of the seventh. After a leadoff error, Howell helped his cause with an RBI double to cut the deficit in half. Monroeville added an insurance run in the eighth on Jimmy Williams’ RBI triple. The Hornets got runners to second base in both the eighth and ninth innings but wouldn’t score again.

Game #14 — SoCal 10, Monroeville 9

A crazy game went back and forth. Monroeville led 4-1 after three. SoCal went up 6-5 after five. The Maulers went ahead 8-6 after the top of the seventh. The Hornets came right back with three in the bottom of the seventh to pull ahead 9-8. Monroeville tied it in the eighth. SoCal walked it off in the bottom of the ninth. After the Maulers got the first two outs, Fred Tenney singled, his fourth hit of the game. Emil Frisk uncorked a pair of wild pitches to move Tenney to third base. Dick Padden came through with his third hit of the day and his fourth RBI to end the game. Six Hornets had multi-hit games, including William Nance, who led off the bottom of the first with a home run. Eddie Plank (3-1) got the win in relief after blowing a save opportunity.
