The Southern California Hornets couldn’t hit and didn’t field well in their latest two-game series, and the result was a pair of losses to the Hagerstown Iron Horses. SoCal managed just four runs and 13 hits over the two contests. Joe Sugden did well in some rare starts, contributing to all four runs by scoring two and driving in two. The Hornets fell to 8-10 and the Iron Horses improved to 8-13.

Game #17 — Hagerstown 6, SoCal 1
The Hornets scored first in the top of the fourth. With one out, Joe Sugden walked. Algie McBride doubled, sending Sugden to third. Dick Padden came through with an RBI single, but the Hornets made a costly mistake as the slow-footed McBride was thrown out at the plate. SoCal wouldn’t score again. For a while, it looked like one run might be enough the way Harry Howell was throwing. But the Iron Horses tied the game in the sixth on Claude Ritchey’s RBI double. Things fell apart in the seventh when the Hornets committed three errors and the Iron Horses collected five hits to score five unearned runs. Howell (2-4) gave up 11 hits in his eight innings, but only one of the six runs was earned.

Game #18 — Hagerstown 4, SoCal 3
Hagerstown got one in the top of the first, but SoCal staged a two-out rally in the bottom of the first. After the first two outs were made, Fred Clarke walked, Fred Tenney singled and Joe Sugden came through with a two-run single to put the Hornets up 2-1. Hagerstown regained the lead with three runs in the fourth inning, however. SoCal got one back in the bottom half of the frame. Sugden led off with a single and scored on Herman Long’s two-out double. SoCal couldn’t ever tie the game, however, going hitless in their final six at-bats with runners in scoring position. Eddie Plank (3-2) didn’t pitch great, though well enough to win if the Hornets had hit better. The Hornets made three errors for the second straight game.
