The Southern California Hornets had another rough showing, this time in a divisional series against the Carolina Swamp Foxes. The Hornets won just one of three to drop down the Herson Division ranks. William Nance had a good series, batting 6-for-14 (.429) with two extra-base hits and three RBI.
The Hornets (9-12) are now just about halfway through the season. The Herson Division standings are currently Ocala (16-10), Harmony (7-8), Carolina (10-13), SoCal (9-12) and Guests (5-8).

SoCal couldn’t muster much offense against Joe McGinnity in the opener. The Hornets already trailed 4-0 when they scored their only run in the fifth inning. Bill Bernhard led off with a walk, went to third on a single by William Nance and scored on Fred Clarke’s RBI single. Bernhard (1-4) wasn’t at his best, giving up 15 hits and 10 runs, though two SoCal errors made five of those runs unearned.

The Hornets’ offense bounced back quickly by scoring six runs in the first two innings. Roger Bresnahan had a two-run triple in the first inning and a two-run single in the second inning to highlight the offense. Fred Clarke, William Nance and Dick Padden all had three hits and the Hornets amassed 14 total hits. Eddie Plank (4-2) pitched well enough for the win. Carolina scored in just two innings but Plank stranded at least one Swamp Fox baserunner in scoring position in six other frames.

The Hornets couldn’t win the rubber match after giving up five runs in the first two innings, chasing Bill Reidy from the game. Two strong relief performances by Roger Denzer and Harry Howell gave the Hornets a chance by only giving up one more run the rest of the way. SoCal got an RBI single by William Nance in the third inning and an RBI double by Harry Steinfeldt in the fourth to make it 5-2. Nance had a two-run triple in the seventh to make it 6-4. SoCal wouldn’t get any closer, though.
