The Southern California Hornets had another rough series, but at least won the finale in their three-game set against Guests in the Corn. SoCal managed just six runs and 17 hits (a .191 team average) in the three contests, with five of the six runs coming in the final game. Herman Long was the only Hornet to have a notable time at the plate, batting 5-for-10 (.500). The pitching and defense was pretty good, though.
Herson Division Standings: Ocala 16-10 (.615), Ottumwa 7-8 (.467), Guests 7-9 (.438), Carolina 10-13 (.435), SoCal 10-14 (.417)

Game #22 — Guests 2, SoCal 1
The Guests broke open a scoreless game in the fourth when Buck Freeman led off with an RBI single, Ed Delahanty followed with an RBI triple, and Harry Wolverton posted an RBI single to make it 2-0. That would be all Eddie Plank (4-3) would allow, which would be enough for a win on most nights. But the SoCal offense disappeared, scoring one run on five hits against Tom Hughes, even though he issued seven walks. Joe Sugden had an RBI double in the sixth inning. The Hornets loaded the bases with one out in the eighth but hit into a double play.

Game #23 — Guests 5, SoCal 0
As bad as the offense was in game one, it was even worse in game two, as the Hornets were shut out for the first time this season. Roy Patterson gave up just three hits. The Hornets put a runner into scoring position each time with those hits, but couldn’t ever bring him home. Bill Reidy (2-3) was great for a while. He didn’t give up a hit until the fifth inning and took a shutout into the sixth. But disaster struck in the top of the sixth when LF William Nance and SS Herman Long collided going for a popup. The first run of the game scored and both players were forced to leave the game. The Corn scored in each of the final four innings, including a solo homer by Malachi Kittredge in the seventh.

Game #24 — SoCal 5, Guests 3
The Hornets showed a little more fight in the finale. With runners on second and third with one out in the second inning, Herman Long had a bunt single that scored the game’s first run. In the fifth, Long singled and made it to third base with one out. He scored on a successful squeeze bunt by William Nance to make it 2-0. Harry Howell (3-4) kept the Corn off the board until the sixth inning, when Ed Delahanty hit a solo homer to make it 2-1. After scoring just three runs in the first 25 innings, SoCal’s bats finally awoke for a big inning in the bottom of the eighth, scoring three times. With two outs, Fred Tenney had an RBI double, Dick Padden had an RBI single and Long finished his 4-for-4 day with an RBI double. That put the Hornets up 5-1 going to the ninth. It almost wasn’t enough. Howell finally faltered, giving up four straight hits to begin the inning. Two runs scored to make it 5-3 and the Corn had runners on second and third with no one out. SoCal went to the bullpen and brought in Bill Bernhard. He coaxed an infield pop fly, a shallow fly ball to center field and another flyout to center to preserve the victory and earn the save.
