The Southern California Hornets’ slide to the bottom of the Herson Division continued with a two-game sweep at the hands of the Seitz Division-leading Mudville Mustachios, one via blowout, the other via walk-off.
The Hornets are 2-8 in their last 10 and have fallen to 10-16. Mudville is 16-7 on the season. For SoCal, Herman Long, Dick Padden and William Nance all had three hits over the two games.

Mudville jumped out to a 6-0 lead after the top of the fifth, and that would be enough to get SoCal starter Bill Bernhard (1-5) pulled from the game. The Hornets finally scored on a two-out RBI single from William Nance in the fifth. They made it 6-2 in the sixth when Fred Clarke led off with a single, stole second and scored on a groundout by Harry Steinfeldt. Hornet reliever Cowboy Jones made his season debut and pitched three 1-2-3 innings before giving up two runs in the ninth.

The Hornets went up 1-0 in the fourth inning on a two-out RBI single by Roger Bresnahan. They regained the lead at 3-2 in the seventh on an RBI single by Dick Padden and an RBI double by Herman Long, both with two outs. A disastrous bottom of the seventh was kicked off by a Hornet error, and the Mustachios scored four unearned runs to take a 6-3 lead. The Hornets showed some grit in the top of the ninth. After the first out, a walk and an error put two runners on. Padden and Long came through with RBI singles to make it 6-5. The Mustachios opted to play deep for a double play, and it almost worked, but pinch-hitter Algie McBride was able to beat the throw at first, resulting in an RBI fielder’s choice, tying the game at six. Eddie Plank (4-4) took the mound in the bottom of the ninth, but the Hornets’ ace couldn’t extend the game into extra innings. Dan McGann led off with a single and a steal of second. After the first out, followed by a walk, Kip Selbach ended the contest with an RBI single.
