Thanks to a great outing from Bill Bernhard, the Southern California Hornets ended a four-game losing streak and won the opener against the Kansas City Blues. The Hornets (11-19) had the opportunity to make it a sweep, but lost by one run for the 10th time this season, this one in extra innings.

Bill Bernhard (2-5) scattered 10 hits and gave up just two runs, one earned. He didn’t walk anyone and struck out three. The Blues stranded four runners in scoring position, including a runner on third base in the ninth inning. The Hornets took the lead in the second inning when Bernhard had an RBI triple. After the Blues tied it, SoCal went back in front in the fifth when Fred Tenney doubled and scored on Fred Clarke’s double. The Hornets got a needed insurance run in the seventh when William Nance led off with a triple and then stole home.

Game #30 — Kansas City 9, SoCal 8 (10 inn.)
Kansas City led 5-1 after three innings, but SoCal scored four times in the top of the fourth to tie the game. Pinch-hitter Tommy Dowd had a two-run double and Algie McBride and William Nance had RBI singles. Kansas City went back up 6-5, but SoCal tied it again at six in the top of the fifth on Dick Padden’s RBI single. It stayed 6-6 until the bottom of the eighth, when the Blues began the inning with three straight hits, including an RBI double by Doc Powers and an RBI single by Frank Isbell to make it 8-6. The Hornets didn’t go quietly in the ninth. After the first out, Fred Clarke walked and Harry Steinfeldt singled. Joe Sugden came through with a two-run triple to tie the game at eight. The Hornets couldn’t bring him home, however, hitting into a double play on an attempted squeeze play. Eddie Plank (4-5) came in in the bottom of the 10th and that didn’t go well, as Matty McIntyre led off with a double and two outs later, scored on a game-ending hit by John Ganzel.
