9/7-9/1984: Atlanta at San Francisco

A sweep would have gotten the San Francisco Giants out of the cellar, but they could only manage wins in two of three games against the poor-performing Atlanta Braves in this 1984 Community Replay Project series.

The Giants’ Rob Deer, making his season debut, batted 6-for-10 (.600) with four home runs., while Dan Gladden hit .467 (7-for-15). Dale Murphy also batted 7-for-15 (.467) to lead the Braves.

Sept. 7 — replay SF 6-5 — actual SF 5-4
Sept. 8 — replay SF 9-3 — actual SF 4-0
Sept. 9 — replay ATL 11-4 — actual SF 6-4

Sept. 7 (6-5 Giants): The Giants overcame a 5-2 deficit thanks to Rob Deer’s two-run homer in the sixth inning and Bob Brenly’s two-RBI single in the seventh inning. Greg Minton pitched three innings of scoreless relief for the victory.

Sept. 9 (11-4 Braves): The Braves began the top of the third inning with five straight singles to take a 3-0 lead. They had five hits in a six-run fifth inning, which included two-run doubles by Randy Johnson and Glenn Hubbard. Johnson, Dale Murphy and Rafael Ramirez all had three-hit days for the Braves, who had a total of 18 hits against the Giants. Rob Deer hit his fourth home run of the series for San Francisco.
