1901 HRBL: SoCal vs. Ocala #2

Following the trade break, the Southern California Hornets got back into action against the division’s top team, the Ocala Stallions. Things rolled the Hornets’ way against a pitching-depleted Stallions squad, and SoCal took two of three games.

The Hornets made two trades during the break. Starting outfielder William Nance went to Bluffton and backup shortstop Tommy Corcoran went to Silver Spring, both in exchange for 1903 third-round picks. SoCal also received outfielder Fred Crolius from Silver Spring.

Roger Bresnahan went 8-for-15 (.533), with a five-hit game in the opener. Eddie Plank won the first game and Bill Reidy pitched a shutout in the finale.

The Hornets went into this series having just won just one of the last eight games. They were swept by Ocala in the first series of the season.

Herson Division Standings: Ocala 23-15 (.605), Asheville 19-16 (.543), Guests in the Corn 16-16 (.500), Carolina 16-22 (.421), SoCal 13-22 (.371)

Game #33 — SoCal 8, Ocala 3 (10 inn.)

Roger Bresnahan had five hits and played a part in five of the eight runs. He had had an RBI single in the first, then singled and scored runs in the fifth and seventh innings as the Hornets took a one-run lead three times. With two outs in the bottom of the ninth, Ocala’s Sammy Strang walked. John Farrell tried for a walk-off inside-the-park home run, but was thrown out at the plate. But his hit sent the game to extra innings. In the top of the 10th, the Hornets lit up D-rated reliever Frank Own, scoring five runs, including a two-run triple by Bresnahan. Eddie Plank (5-6) went 10 innings and picked up his team-high fifth win of the season.

Game #35 — SoCal 12, Ocala 0

Bill Reidy (3-4) was incredible, tossing his second shutout of the season while giving up just four hits and one walk. Harry Steinfeldt hit the team’s third home run of the season, a two-run blast in the third inning that made it 3-0. It stayed that way until the seventh inning when the Hornets broke through for 10 runs. Tommy Dowd led off with a double, and after the first out was made, SoCal had seven straight hits, including a two-run double by Clarke and an RBI triple by Steinfeldt. Dowd added a two-run single in the ninth inning for the final margin.
