1901 HRBL: SoCal vs. Carolina #2

Things tightened up at the bottom of the Herson Division as the Southern California Hornets had a pair of walk-off victories to win two out of three against the visiting Carolina Swamp Foxes. With three games to play in the season, the Hornets are one game back of the Foxes. And, at least for the moment, SoCal doesn’t have the worst winning percentage in the league.

Fred Tenney and Roger Bresnahan had walk-off RBI singles in the ninth innings of games two and three, respectively. Fred Clarke batted .500 (6-for-12) to lead the squad.

Herson Division Standings: Ocala 24-17 (.585), Asheville 24-20 (.545), Guests 18-17 (.514), Carolina 17-24 (.415), SoCal 16-25 (.390)

Game #39 — Carolina 3, SoCal 0

Joe McGinnity outdueled Eddie Plank (5-8) with a four-hit shutout as the Swamp Foxes won the opener. It was scoreless until the sixth when Carolina scored an unearned run, and they added two more in the eighth to put the game away. Fred Clarke and Fred Crolius (making his Hornets debut) had two hits apiece to account for all of the SoCal hitting. The Hornets got runners to third base twice but couldn’t bring them home.

Game #40 — SoCal 8, Carolina 7

Bill Reidy couldn’t collect his third straight shutout, and a ninth-inning collapse cost him the win. Carolina scored four runs in the top of the ninth to tie the game at seven. Trailing by three with two outs, the Swamp Foxes went double-triple-triple to tie it. In the bottom of the ninth, Dick Padden led off with a single and went to second on a groundout. After the second out was made, Fred Tenney came through with a walk-off single. After blowing a save opportunity in the top of the ninth, Harry Howell (4-7) earned the win.
