The Southern California Hornets stayed hot and closed out the 1901 HRBL campaign by taking two of three games from the Guests in the Corn. The Hornets came back from the trade break by winning three of four series and going 7-5.
It might be enough to keep the Hornets (18-26) out of the cellar, depending on other games. SoCal might have spoiled Guests’ chances at the playoffs, as they’ll now need to sweep their final three-game series.
Fred Clarke batted .500 (6-for-12) with three doubles and four RBI to raise his team-leading batting average to .354.
Herson Division Standings: Ocala 25-19 (.568), Asheville 24-20 (.545), Guests 21-20 (.512), Carolina 17-24 (.415), SoCal 18-26 (.409)
Game #42 — SoCal 3, Guests 2
Eddie Plank (6-8) was terrific, keeping the Corn off the board until the eighth inning. The Hornets led 3-0 at that point. Dick Padden had an RBI triple in the second inning, followed by a Herman Long sacrifice fly. In the top of the eighth, Fred Tenney led off with a single and later scored on a Harry Steinfeldt sacrifice fly. The Guests broke up the shutout in the bottom of the eighth, scoring twice, though only one run was earned. With the tying and go-ahead runs on base, Plank got the final out in the eighth, then pitched a 1-2-3 ninth.

Game #43 — SoCal 12, Guests 11
SoCal led 9-2 after the top of the fourth. Fred Clarke had a two-run double in the first inning. He was intentionally walked his next two times up, and Harry Steinfeldt made them pay with a two-run double in the third inning and a two-run single in the fourth inning. Algie McBride also had a two-run double in the fourth. Bill Reidy (5-4) couldn’t maintain the big lead, as the Guests cut the deficit to 10-8 after six innings. It was still 10-8 in the ninth. SoCal picked up two big insurance runs on an RBI single by Roger Bresnahan and a bases-loaded walk to McBride. They needed all of them, as the Guests scored three runs in the bottom of the ninth against the bullpen, including a two-run homer by John Skopec. Harry Howell came in relief with one out. An error put the tying run on second base, but Howell got the second out, then picked the runner off second to end the contest and get the save.

Game #44 — Guests 6, SoCal 4
The Guests got three runs in the first inning, and it stayed 3-0 through five innings. The Hornets got on the board in the sixth on Fred Clarke’s two-run single. But the Corn rebuilt the lead with two runs in the bottom of the sixth, and Ed Delahanty homered in the seventh to make it 6-2. SoCal rallied in the ninth, as Harry Steinfeldt had an RBI triple and Algie McBride had an RBI single to bring the tying run to the plate with no outs. But the Guests got the final three outs to win the finale. Only three of Bill Bernhard’s (3-7) six runs allowed were earned.
