In a matchup between two teams in the bottom half of the American League West standings, the Texas Rangers took two out of three games on the road at the Oakland Athletics.
In the 1984 Community Replay Project, the A’s are in fifth place at 70-82 while the Rangers are in last (seventh) at 65-86.
Buddy Bell had team highs of five hits and four RBI for the Rangers. Frank Tanana and Charlie Hough pitched well in the two Texas victories. Carney Lansford had six hits and four RBI to pace the Athletics.

Sept. 17 (6-4 Oakland): After not doing much for the first six innings, the Athletics erased a 3-1 deficit with a five-run seventh inning. Mickey Tettleton had a two-run triple and Bill Almon, Rickey Henderson and Carney Lansford all had RBI singles. The A’s Bill Krueger struggled early, giving up nine walks to go with four hits, but managed to keep the score close by stranding 10 runners on base in the first four innings. The comeback gave Krueger the win. Bill Caudill pitched the ninth for the save, though he did give up a solo homer to the Rangers’ Larry Parrish.

Sept. 18 (4-3 Texas): Texas got all its runs in the third inning to go up 4-0. Buddy Bell and Ned Yost both had two-run singles. The A’s got one back in the bottom of the third on Carney Lansford’s RBI single. Lansford later hit a two-run homer in the seventh to cut the deficit to one run. But the A’s couldn’t score again off of Frank Tanana, who earned the complete-game win.
