I’ve completed two seasons of my West Coast College MLB League utilizing Pocket Pennant Run. I took 10 of the most successful college programs on the West Coast and put together rosters based on their players’ success in Major League Baseball.
Once again, there were 19-man rosters for 10 schools: eight position players, one DH, four starting pitchers and six relievers.
To try to create at least a little bit of parity, the following limitations were put in place based on PPR ratings:
- No more than four A-rated hitters in the lineup, and at least one C-rated hitter.
- No more than two A-rated starting pitchers.
- No more than three A-rated relief pitchers, and at least one C-rated reliever.
So, not every player selected is necessarily utilizing their best MLB season.
Like season 1, there was an 18-game season — each school played the other twice, home and away — for 90 total games rolled with the dice.
The 10 schools remained the same: Arizona, Arizona State, California, Cal State Fullerton, Long Beach State, Oregon State, Pepperdine, Stanford, UCLA and USC.
During the offseason, I put more work into making each team’s roster as strong as possible under the parameters that I set, at least more than I did for the initial season. In season 1, USC won the league title over UCLA and Arizona State by two games, though it came down to the final gameday. They were clearly the strongest three teams.
In season two, I expected a bit more competition and unpredictability. While some teams played much differently, the champion was the same. USC won the league with a record of 14-4 for the second straight season.
