After splitting their week 7 series against the 1962 San Francisco Giants, the 1961 New York Yankees left the door open for a competitor to challenge for the top spot. But everyone else within striking distance also went 2-2 against each other, so the Yankees are on the verge of their third straight title, as they head into the final four games of the season with a two-game lead.
The 17-11 Yankees will face the 14-14 1961 Detroit Tigers, who have played well in the second half of the season. The Tigers must sweep to give themselves a shot at the title. And if the Tigers don’t win the series, it’ll probably be the Yankees again. The 15-13 1967 St. Louis Cardinals face the 14-14 1967 Boston Red Sox, while the 15-13 1969 Minnesota Twins meet the 13-15 1969 New York Mets. The Cardinals and Twins may need a sweep plus some help.
Other things to watch in the final week: can Norm Cash (.386) or George Scott (.376) have a big final series to become the first .400 hitter in league history? Roger Maris already has a GTOP-record 15 home runs, but can he hold off Rocky Colavito, who’s at 13? Several players are within reach of the RBI record of 33. Maury Wills has 15 stolen bases, one shy of Ty Cobb’s record. Jerry Koosman needs just two strikeouts in his final start to set a league record.
And, the Yankees need to sweep to get to 21 wins, or we’ll have a champion with the fewest victories in league history.
